Bodies change. That is what they are supposed to do.
Maybe you have gained or lost weight. Maybe you have had a baby, started menopause, recovered from surgery, changed your workout routine or simply gotten older. Sometimes the change is obvious. Other times, you just notice that the bras you used to love do not feel quite right anymore.
The band rides up. The straps dig in. The cups gap or spill. You keep adjusting yourself throughout the day. Or you cannot wait to take your bra off the minute you get home.
If that sounds familiar, your body is not the problem. Your bra may simply be supporting a version of you that no longer exists.
Many women are still wearing the size they were measured for years ago—or the size they guessed after trying on a few bras in a department store.
But a bra size is not part of your identity, and it is not something you have to stay loyal to. It is only a starting point for finding what fits your body today.
Even when the number on the scale has not changed, your breasts can. Pregnancy, nursing, hormonal shifts, menopause, surgery, medication, aging and changes in activity can all affect how your breast tissue sits and how a bra fits.
And sometimes your size has not changed much, but your shape has. That matters too. Two women can wear the same size and need completely different bras because their bodies carry breast tissue differently.
That is why I look beyond the label during a fitting. I pay attention to your shape, fullness, density, comfort and what you actually need your bra to do.
Your bra does not need to be falling apart before you replace it. Your body will usually give you clues that the fit is off.
Most of a bra’s support should come from the band. If it creeps upward, shifts around or feels loose even on the tightest hook, it may be stretched out or too large.
Tightening the straps is not the answer to every fit problem. If they are carrying too much of the weight, they can dig into your shoulders. If they constantly slide down, the band, cup, strap placement or bra style may not be right for your body.
Breast tissue coming over the top, underneath or along the sides of the cups is a sign that you may need more room—or a cup shape that better matches your shape.
Empty space does not always mean the cup is too large. It can also mean the bra is the wrong shape for you. This is one reason that going down a cup size without looking at the whole fit does not always solve the problem.
The wire should surround your breast tissue comfortably. It should not stab you under the arm, press against breast tissue or leave you counting the minutes until you can take the bra off.
Pulling the band down. Tucking yourself back into the cups. Tightening a strap again. If your bra needs that much attention, it is not doing its job.
Sometimes the first clue shows up in your clothing. A blouse may pull across the bust. A dress may not fall the way it used to. A T-shirt may show lines or bulges you did not notice before. The right bra can change how your clothes sit without asking your body to change at all.
One of the biggest frustrations I hear is, “But I have always been this size.”
I understand. A different size can feel surprising, especially if no one has ever explained that bra sizing varies between brands and styles. You may wear one size in one bra and a nearby size in another. Neither label says anything about your worth, your health or what your body should look like.
Pretty should not hurt. And support should not depend on squeezing yourself into a familiar number.
The goal is not to leave a fitting with the smallest band or the largest cup. The goal is to find the bra that feels secure, comfortable and beautiful on your body.
Your body may also need different support for different parts of your life.
The bra you wear under a smooth T-shirt may not be the one you choose for a special occasion. Your workout bra has a different job from your everyday bra. Some days you may want structure and lift. Other days, a soft wireless style may feel better.
You do not need a drawer full of bras you never wear. A thoughtful bra wardrobe can start with a few pieces that fit your real life:
An everyday bra that feels comfortable for hours
A smooth option for fitted clothing
A supportive sports bra for movement
A special-occasion or strapless bra when your wardrobe calls for one
A softer style for the days when comfort comes first
Start with what you need most. You do not have to solve your entire bra drawer in one visit.
Choose the bra you wear most often and put it on in front of a mirror. Do not judge your body. Look at what the bra is doing.
Is the band level across your back? Are your breasts fully contained in the cups? Does the center of the bra sit where it should? Can you move, sit and breathe comfortably? Do you feel supported without feeling trapped?
Most importantly: how do you feel in it?
If you are uncomfortable, constantly adjusting or avoiding certain clothes because of your bra, you do not have to keep settling. Your body may have changed, but that does not mean your choices have to shrink.
At Shush Lingerie, your fitting is private and personal. We talk about what is bothering you, what you wear most often and how you want to feel. Then I assess your fit, shape and support needs and bring you a curated selection to try.
Shush carries sizes from 28AA through 48L, including fuller cup sizes on both smaller and larger bands. That matters because “fuller bust” does not describe only one body type. You might have a smaller frame and need more cup room, or a fuller figure with a smaller cup. The right fit starts with seeing your whole body—not making assumptions from a single label.
The personalized fitting is $80, and that fee is applied toward your purchase. Fittings are available privately in Beverly Hills and virtually for women who are not nearby.
There is no pressure to become someone new. We are fitting the woman who walked through the door today.
You are allowed to outgrow a bra size, a style or an entire drawer that no longer serves you.
Your body is not wrong because an old bra does not fit. It is simply giving you new information. The right bra should meet you where you are now—with comfort, support and choices that still feel like you.
